On May 27, 1937, the day the golden gate bridge opened (75th anniversary coming up soon!) the bridge almost failed from the weight of so many people walking on it at once, an estimated 750,000 people were there and aprox half a million people were walking on the bridge that day, causing the arch of the bridge platform to actually flatten in at least 3 places, including a 5 foot drop in the center span of the bridge, luckily it was an elastic deformation and the bridge sprang back to its correct shape as soon as the people got off the bridge
